On November 18, 2021, a round table “Rational waste management for sustainable development ” was held within the framework of the international project KS11173, Clean Green City by Smart Waste Management, Cool4City, Cross-border cooperation programme “South-East Finland-Russia” 2014-2020.
The event was organised by the Lead Partner of the project – St. Petersburg State Unitary Enterprise “St. Petersburg Information and Analytical Centre” within the framework of the Meeting of the working group of IT leaders of the regions of the Russian Federation “IT-Dialogue 2021”.
Boris Krylov, Chairman of the Committee on Nature Management and Ecology of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Deputy Chairman of the Environmental Council under the Governor of St. Petersburg, Director of the Association for Environmental Partnership became the moderator of the round table.
Ruslan Karazya, Head of the Department of State Regulation in the Sphere of Waste Management, delivered a welcoming speech from the Committee for Nature Use, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety. Ruslan noted that the project supports the Concept of Continuous Environmental Education in St. Petersburg, contributes to the development of a comfortable, clean and green living environment and ensures long-term cooperation between Finland and Russia.
Further, Ekaterina Solovieva, the Head of the Monitoring and Public Opinion Sector of the Committee greeted the participants on IT and Communications. Ekaterina emphasized that the Committee on IT and Communications supports the project at all stages of its implementation and considers that the planned activities will make a significant contribution to the improvement of the border area.
Project partners represented by Yulia Antipova, Yulia Gladshtein (NP “AsEP”), Evilina Lutfi (Green Net Finland) presented the first results of
a research devoted to study of operational and business models for municipal solid waste management in St. Petersburg, Leningrad Oblast, Mikkeli (Finland) and Helsinki (Finland). Inna Vladimirovna Izvekova, an expert of Cosmos LLC, made a presentation of a guide on separate waste collection for residents of St. Petersburg, developed within the framework of the synergy of environmental projects of the Cross-border cooperation programme
“South-East Finland-Russia” 2014-2020.
Further, Denis Strukov, director of the Geointellect Center for Spatial Research, Tatyana Nagorskaya, head of the environmental movement “Razdelny sbor” (Separate waste collection), Nikolai Kolychev, Chairman of the Waste and Resource Saving Subcommittee of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of St. Petersburg, Artur Khadaev, Environmental Protection Engineer (ecologist) of “LUKOIL-Severo-Zapadnefteprodukt” Ltd. and Valentin Bushikhin, Interregional Public Organisation Environmental Union.
The speakers discussed the current situation in the field of municipal solid waste management in Russia and Finland, the past and future changes, as well as the possibilities of rational waste management in the border region for a sustainable future.
The event ended with a discussion, all the participants were able to exchange views and establish business contacts.
